
Jason Yuan, MD, PhD
Dr. Yuan is a distinguished researcher and educator with a profound impact on the field of pulmonary vascular disease. His professional journey reached new heights when he assumed the role of Professor at the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology. Concurrently, he serves as the Assistant Vice President for Research at UF Health, the University of Florida-Scripps Research in Florida.
Dr. Yuan earned his medical degree from Suzhou Medical College and doctoral degree from Peking Union Medical College in China. After undertaking postdoctoral fellowships in the field of ion channel electrophysiology and lung vascular pathophysiology, Dr. Yuan was appointed as Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1993. He then became Professor (2003) and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine (2007-2010) at the University of California, San Diego. In addition, Dr. Yuan was Professor and Vice Chair for Scholarly Activities (Department of Medicine) in the University of Illinois at Chicago (2010-2014) before he moved to the University of Arizona (UA) in 2014 to take the Associate Vice President for Translational Health Sciences position.
Dr. Yuan is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement in Science, the American Physiological Society, the American Heart Association, and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). He is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is also a Guggenheim Fellow (bestowed by the John Sion Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2008). In addition, Dr. Yuan has assumed multiple leadership positions in the professional associations and the National Institutes for Health (NIH) including Chair of the Pulmonary Circulation Assembly of the ATS and Chair of the Respiratory Integrative Biology and Translational Research (RIBT) study section at NIH. He is currently an Editor-in-Chief of the journal Pulmonary Circulation and serving on the editorial boards for Circulation Research; American Journal of Physiology; Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology; and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Yuan is a leading editor of comprehensive reference book, “Textbook of Pulmonary Vascular Disease (Springer, 2011),” which stands as a cornerstone resource for researchers and clinicians alike, reflecting his deep commitment to advancing the field. Furthermore, his involvement in co-authoring “Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology, (McGraw Hill/Lange, 26th edition, 2019)” a revered resource in medical education, underscores his dedication to sharing knowledge and shaping future generations of healthcare professionals. Dr. Yuan’s research has been constantly supported by the NIH; and he has published more than 360 peer reviewed articles with an h-index of 87.
